Reaching the Wilderness & Beyond...
Fitness & health
The Kokoda Track is extremely challenging both physically and mentally and a reasonable level of fitness is required. When considering walking the track you must be prepared to take on a self training program involving long walks together with some exercise involving cardio vascular routines.
A medically conducted' Stress Test' as well as jogging and walking with a light pack is highly recommended. If you have suffered from any heart problems now or in the past do not even consider the trek.
Fitness is a necessary requirement to participate in this Trek.
Begin training well before your departure at least 10 weeks prior by walking including hills and with a small pack. If you intend to carry your own pack and not use a Personal Porter you should work towards being able to carry an 18Kg+ pack up stairs and hills without effort. If you are unable to achieve this the a Porter is a must.
There are no mandatory vaccinations for PNG but consult your doctor. We recommend at least "HEP A' vaccination and make sure your tetanus booster is current.
You will also need a course of anti-malarial tablets, available by prescription. Additional health information will be provided in trip notes.
